When I was a kid, my mother (who was born and raised in Kitchener) dragged us to the Oktoberfest Parade every year, which explains my severe hatred for parades! I did not develop the same hatred for Sausages and Sauerkraut. They are one of my comfort foods. Some people do not like the sourness of sauerkraut so I have a recipe that uses caramelized onion and peppers to sweeten up the dish and cut some of that acidic taste.

Turkey Sausages and Sauerkraut
Makes 10
Prep time: 20 min
Total time: 1 hr 20 min.

1 tbsp. (15mL) Compliments Pure Olive Oil
2 packages Turkey Sausages 500g each (10 sausages)
1 ¾ cup (425mL) sliced onions
1 ½ cup (375mL) each sliced Compliments Sweet Bell Peppers (3 peppers)
2 tbsp. (30mL) minced garlic
1 jar 810g Sauerkraut drained

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a skillet on medium high heat. Add the oil and heat. Brown the sausages on all sides (5-7 min.). Remove sausages and add the onions and cook till soft and light brown, add the garlic and peppers, cook 2-3 min. add the drained sauerkraut and mix well.
  2. Transfer to a casserole dish and place the sausages on top and place in the oven for 1 hour turning the sausages after 30 min. cook until internal temperature reaches 170°F
  3. Serve with your favourite Compliments Mustard.

I chose the healthier turkey sausage for just that reason, to be healthier. While I said it makes 10 sausages I cannot guarantee that I will leave nine behind for the others! This was my first time trying turkey sausage, I was pleasantly surprised. So if you do not like sauerkraut you may like this dish. Give it a try.
